Thanks to the
MIT Technology Review to point out a great educational movie on a new technology that otherwise thrills only a small group of tech devotees: Hard Drives.
Because of the "superparamagnetic effect" (in which the direction of bits on a hard drive may flip if they are stuck too close to each other, thereby switching their value between 1 and 0, and corrupting the data), the growth in the capacity of hard drives seemed to be limited.
Now Hitachi has developed a new technology, called Perpendicular Magnetic Recording, which allows the bits to be 'standing up' instead of 'laying down', thereby increasing the amount of bits that can be put on any given hard drive space. And in the process, they made this
exciting, fun movie to explain the whole concept. Enjoy!
